The Aversion Project

By: Kenisha Mario & Harumi Aldan

April 8th, 2014

1 st period

The experiments were meant to force

lesbians/gays to become straight.

Not all experiments were documented, but it is estimated that as many as 900 male and female soldiers were operated on and most victims were between the ages of 16-24.

What Was It?

The aversion project were experiments performed on lesbian and gay soldiers during the 1970's-1980's. The experiments consisted of chemical castrations, electric shock, brutal "sex change" operations, and many more.

Why it was unethical

The experiments were performed by the South African Apartheid Army.

-It was wrong because the physical and mental torture that the victims went through was extreme. They were not only affected then, but later in life, causing some to be suicidal.

-The experiments made the victims question their sexuality and left them even more confused.

& Led by Colonel Aubrey Levin, also

known as "Dr. Shock", former psychiatrist.

Voortrekkerhoogte ("Foor-trekker-hoochter") military hospital where majority of the experiments were performed by Chief psychiatrist, Colonel Levin.

Conclusion

We all have our opinions of what is right or wrong. Today, many of us think that this experiment is inhumane, but the truth is there are still others who believe that homosexuality is wrong and that it can be cured through these methods.
