Dabke Dance

Legs

shoulders

The most important part of the dance. The legs move depending on the dance. Each dance has its own unique steps, stomps, and jumps.

  • Shake your shoulders up and down continuously during the whole dance.
  • Take your right foot and take two steps to the front.
  • Take your left foot and take two steps to the back.
  • Kick your right foot to the side, then your left and back to the right.
  • Once the 3rd kick goes, you turn to face the front.
  • Use your right foot to make a quick two steps to the front.
  • Use your left foot's heel to tap on the ground.
  • Jump back by first kicking with your left leg, then your right and back to left.
  • Once the 3rd jump going back goes, you turn back to your side and restart the process.
  • The leader may use any kind of props (stick, handkerchief, etc.) to show that he/she is the leading the dance.

Nobody wants to be stiff while dancing. Be flexible! Have fun!

Head

Shake your shoulders up and down or side to side

When dancing the dabka, it is preferably to not look down at your feet or the floor. Keep your head up high!

ROCK THOSE BODY PARTS!

Head- no looking down!

Shoulders- keep them moving

Legs- the most important part of the dance and that is to stay with the rythem.

the dance originated in the Levant where houses were built from stone with a roof made of wood, straw and dirt. The dirt roof had to be compacted which required stomping the dirt hard in a uniform way to compact it evenly. To make the job more enjoyable men sang along while jumping at the same time. with this the generation created the dabka dance.

Intro!

Everyone dances! from the 2-year-olds to the 90-year-olds. We dance at weddings, parties, celebrations, etc.
