Forensic Botany

Definition:

  • Forensic botany is the scientific study of plants, or the application of plant sciences to criminal investigations.

Types of Forensic Botany

  • Palynology (study of pollens)
  • Dendrochronology (the study of tree rings)
  • Liminology (study of aquatic environments)
  • Systematics (classification of plants)
  • Ecology (the study of ecosystems)
  • Molecular Biology

History:

Forensic botany has been accepted by the legal system since 1935 when it was used as evidence in the Lindberg baby kidnapping. Wood from the kidnappers ladder was analyzed and was influential in the capture of the criminal.

Application

Unlike other forensic sciences, forensic botanists don't work with human remains to solve crimes. Their role is to connect evidence and the crime scene.

Salary

Botanists involved in forensic work make anywhere between $48,000- $130,00 depending on their rank and the amount of employees they command

Education Requirements

Most forensic botanists do not even have degrees in forensics. Most have a bachelors degree in botany/biology. This degree includes emphasis in environmental appreciation, plant form and function, plant genetics.....ect.
