Plaintiff
A student named Thomas Hocutt from North Carolina College for Negroes was denied admission to Pharmacy school at UNC.
Background
It was initiated by 2 lawyers by the name Conrad O. Pearson and Cecil McCoy. They are both practicing in Durham Nc.
Why This Important?
- This was one of the first cases that attempted to desegregate in higher education in the U.S
- It was one of many cases to challenge the "Separate but equal" doctrine
The Case
Even though this may seem like an important event, it did not receive much support from the community. At the end James E. Shepard refused to Release Hocutt transcript due to funding purposes.So they denied Thomas Hocutt admission.
