What is Hazard?

Industrial Hazard

Industrial hazard is the cause of harm, damage or further injury or death to loss of a worker product or property by industries.

Hazard is a biological, physical, chemical and physical agent that causes harm and physical damage to living beings and the environment when being unaware or neglecting safety precautions while using substances or objects.

Introduction

The types of Industry Hazards

Sources of Hazard Information

Safety Precautions

Industrial Safety

Industrial safety refers to the protection of workers from danger in industrial workplaces.

Safety

Safety refers to the avoidance and protection of physical harm, injury, damage, death or loss.

Safety Precautions

To prevent any harm or injuries...

-Be certain there is clean and safe access (roads, walkways, ladders) to and from place of work.

Sources of Information

-Materials and substances are to be carefully stored to its proper place.

OSHA

-Discard waste materials and substances.

-Have sufficient lighting when working.

OSHA, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration

provides newsletters, hazards information, and other pertinent information regarding workplace safety and workers rights.

www.osha.gov

-Make sure to have a skilled person regularly inspect used equipment .

Passport to Safety

Passport to Safety is a national safety test, certification and record program for workers that is taken online. People who accomplished the test earn a certificate or "passport" which validate the person's basic understanding of workplace health and safety.

This source of hazard information promotes awareness, and cultural change, and also prevents workplace injuries and deaths.

-Wear personal protective equipment suited for the workplace.

*Online Passport to Safety tests can be obtained and paid individually without membership.

-Report any injuries.

OSHA VIDEOS available for employees at www.osha.gov

Material Safety Data Sheets issues workers and emergency workers handling and operating with a substance in a safe way. MSDSs features physical data (flash/melting/boiling points), health effects, reactivity, first aid, storage, disposal , protective equipment and spill-handling procedures.

OSHA INFORMATION IS ALSO AVAILABLE IN SPANISH

Types of Industrial Hazards

There are several types of industrial hazards, such as: ergonomic, mechanical, electrical and chemical hazards.

Ask your worksite supervisor about

their site specific safety policies and procedures.

If you aren't clear on any policies, please contact Marathon immediately!

Electrical Hazard

An electrical hazard is caused when a worker makes physical contact with energized equipment or an electrical conductor.

Majority of the hazards are associated with electrical shock and fire.

Electrically powered equipment (lasers, heating mantles, microwave ovens) primarily cause serious injuries on workers when they are not properly handled and maintained.

Solutions

Mechanical Hazard

-Eliminate the potential for water or chemical spills on or near electrical apparatus.

-Identify wiring of equipment before each use.

A mechanical hazard is caused by the powered operation of machinery, and technical tools and apparatus.

Ergonomic Hazard

A mechanical hazard, such as: crush-point hazard occurs when a moving object comes in contact with a stationary object.

Crush- point Hazard

Nonfatal injuries related to crush-point incidents include crushed tissue, cuts, and broken bones.

Solutions

Solutions

-Examine machines that may have crush points.

-Do not allow anyone to stand or place any body parts in the space between two objects that form a crush point.

An ergonomic hazard causes injuries (strains and sprains)

by carrying out the same tasks in motion repeatedly (vacuuming carpet), using physical force

(lifting heavy objects),and staying in an

uncomfortable position

(twisting body to reach an object).

-Wear padded gloves for improvement on grip and comfort.

-Use lightweight vacuums to easily pivot.

Chemical Hazard

-Take rest breaks.

A chemical hazard causes serious and

permanent damage to people when flammable and reactive substances are mishandled.

Further damage or injury is associated

with inhaling, touching or ingestion of chemical substances.

Solutions

-Read labels of chemical substances carefully.

-Wear protective gear (eye goggles, gloves).
