Vanno came to Dampier from a town named Abruzzi which is located in Italy. He came for one reason. He came to Dampier for the money he would receive at the job he was offered.
Vanno is a tall, italian man with a mullet of long curly hair and a mustache, and he also has a strong Italian accent.
Over the course of the film, Vanno develops a strong relationship with Red Dog. He opens up to Red Dog and talks to him about how he feels. Vanno also has a liking for a veterinary nurse that he keeps bringing Red Dog to just to see her. He asks her on a date but that is the last we see of this relationship in the film.
Vanno has a habit for constantly mentioning his home town Abruzzi. Everyone else in the town has grown sick and tired of hearing Vanno talk about Abruzzi and how beautiful it is, causing them to dislike him.
Red Dog helped Vanno in a few instances during the film. At the start of the film, Red Dog allowed Vanno someone to talk to, and let Vanno open up his feelings to him. Later in the film, Red Dog is used as a reason to go see the vet so Vanno can see the nurse that works there that he fancies.
Vanno is a very influential character throughout the story. He evidently grows and adapts his behaviours to fit in. At the start of the movie, he is homesick to death and couldn't stop talking about Abruzzi even if his life depended on it. Towards the end of the film, he does not mention Abruzzi at all. You can see he has been widely accepted by the community and this means a lot to him.
When Vanno first arrived in Dampier, he was not very well liked because he was constantly talking about his home town Abruzzi. He was clearly very homesick. Everyone was fed up with him constantly chatting about Abruzzi. At this point, he was not very welcomed in Dampier as everyone wanted to avoid him. The longer he stayed in Dampier, the less he became homesick from Abruzzi and the more he accepted Dampier as his home.
