This book is about a boy

named John Barron. He is

fourteen.

He lived on a family farm in Wyoming.

They had hundreds of sheep. Every

summer they had to take the sheep

up in the mountains.

Usually a family friend named

Tinckner, which they called Tink,

went up with the sheep. Then, John's

dad took Tink to the doctor and found out that Tink had cancer. Then John's dad came back home and left Tink in the Hospital.

So John had to take the sheep up there and stay there for three months. He didn't want to go. He thought that a worker named Cawley could go up there but his dad said that John had to go.

So John's dad went back to the hospital. That

left Cawley and John at the farm alone. They took

the wagon that John had to stay in and herded

the sheep up to the mountain. Cawley had to go

back to the farm to do buisness. He told John that

in a month or two somebody will come to check on

John and bring more food. Then Cawley left.

By the second day that John was alone he already had a dead lamb that was bit by a rattlesnake, an injured dog, and his wagon was flipped over in the stream because during the night there was a big flood that flooded the whole camp.

Then, after the a couple of days coyotes came and attacked the sheep. John had ran the coyotes off the first time. He would have shot the coyotes but he lost the rifle in the flood. By the next time a set of coyotes came John found the rifle and shot one of the coyotes and that made the rest run away and never come back. Then, during the night a bear came up onto the herd and killed a lot of sheep. It also broke a dogs rib and dislocated John's shoulder.

After that everything went pretty good. John got the wagon back up to the campground and cleaned everything up. Then, John's dad came up through the valley and stayed with John over night and told stories. Then, in the morning John's dad left and John rode out with him. Then, When his dad was far enough away he turned around and started back to the camp. When John was half way back he turned around and saw his dad coming back. Then, they stayed together for the rest of the month.
