The following four sections give an overview of participation in COST activities by researchers based in the Western Balkans region between 2014-2019.

The Western Balkans region incorporates six countries: Albania,
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia
and Serbia. All six countries are part of the COST community.
During the period 2014-2019, Albania and Montenegro joined COST
as Member countries and Kosovo* became a near neighbour country.

The number of individual researchers from Western Balkan countries active in the COST programme has doubled during the time period.

The number of female researchers from Western Balkan countries who are active in the COST programme has more than doubled during the time period.
Increase of leadership positions within COST Actions between 2014-2019
There has been a strong rise in the number of leadership positions* held by researchers based within the Western Balkan countries. This growth trend has been demonstrated across all COST Members from the region.
*Leadership positions: Action chair, Action vice chair, working group leader, STSM coordinator, science communication manager.
