Essentialist vs Progressivist

This best-selling, ground-breaking work spells out the theory behind the Core Knowledge® movement. To be able to function and prosper in society, one must possess the background knowledge that literate writers and speakers assume their audiences already share. Those who know it are culturally literate; the opportunities of a free society are open to them. Schools that neglect to impart this core knowledge leave their students seriously deprived and our democracy weakened.

"Learning builds on learning"

Now retired, he spent many years teaching at the University of Virginia while also being an advocate for the "back to basics" movement

Hirsch was the Founder and Chairman of the Core of Knowledge Foundation and author to several books concerning fact-based approaches to education

He is famous for his works like....

Essentialists believe that teachers should instill such traditional American virtues as respect for authority, perseverance, fidelity to duty, consideration for others, and practicality.

Objectives

By the end of this lesson, we will be able to achieve the folowing:

Core knowledge in Essentialism

Essentialism as a Teacher-Centered Philosophy

  • Essentialism is based off the philosophies of idealism and realism
  • Essentialism refers to "traditional" or "Back to Basics" approach to education.
  • It contends that schools should not try to radically reshape society.
  • Its name comes from striving to instill students with the "essentials" of academic knowledge and character development.

Cultural Literacy

  • Know the life of E.D Hirsch
  • Explain how did E.d Hirsch influence education
  • Understand the underlying concepts of cultural literacy.

As a result of the Hirschism movement, a book was published in the year 1938 on what is cultural literacy.

The role of the teacher as the leader of the classroom is a very important tenet of Educational essentialism. The teacher is the center of the classroom, so they should be rigid and disciplinary.

What is Core Knowledge?

Of his formative years, he has said that he inherited "this load of guilt that Southerners have"[3] which influenced his lifelong commitment to social equality

The idea behind Core Knowledge is simple and powerful: knowledge builds on knowledge. The more you know, the more you are able to learn

This insight, well-established by cognitive science, has profound implications for teaching and learning. Nearly all of our most important goals for education–greater reading comprehension, the ability to think critically and solve problems, even higher test scores–are a function of the depth and breadth of our knowledge.
