How We Came to Be

American Desi Pacific Islander American Collective

NAIC strives to serve the severely underrepresented communities of Native American and Indigenous-identified students at The University of Texas at Austin. Our events and meetings are purposed to foster our community, explore our culture, and discover our identities.

APAC strives to foster unity, provide leadership training, advocate for awareness, and encourage a stronger sense of community.

QPOCA contributes to the self-empowerment and visibility of people of color, and queer people and their communities at UT. They aim to address stereotypes around campus and the Austin community by raising awareness and offering resources for queer students, students of color, and allies.

  • Michael Davis led an student initiative in 1988 for the creation of the then, Minority Information Center.

  • According to Davis the original purpose of the Center was to serve as the "sole source of information relating to minority students, especially regarding scholarship information, scoial information, finance information and any other information which would be relative to the minority student."

  • The Center operated on a $1000 budget as an agency of what's now called, Student Government.

How We Came to Be

  • When the Center w founded only 35% of Black students and 45% of Latino students graduated from the university in 5 years or less.

  • Because of the staggering statistics and lack of university attention to the issue, the retention of Black and Latino students became the primary focus of the Center.
