Where were they located?

The Apalachee Tribe was located in Northwest Florida. They were east of the Aucilla River (Right), west of the Ochlockonee River (Left), and from the Gulf of Mexico to the Georgia State line.

When did they get there?

They were first at the Velda Mound. This was around 1450 AD. Before their run-ins with Europeans they had around 50,000-60,000 Apalachees

Is a ceremonial mound located in Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida. It was founded in 1450 AD and abandoned in 1625 AD.

What foods did they eat?

The Apalachee tribe would hunt and grow their own food. Most of these foods being eaten to this day.

The women would normally wear Spanish moss clothing. While the men would wear deerskin loinclothes.

What did they do for fun?

Fun

For fun they would play a ball game known as the "Apalachee ball game". Villages would challenge each other to a 100 on 100 game. They would use a hard clay ball about the size of a tennis ball covered in buckskin. The teams would use their feet to work the ball down the field towards a goal post. This was a stuffed eagle in a nest. They would dedicate this to the thunder and rain gods for good crop weather.

What is with the mounds?

These ceremonial mounds were very large. It was said that the largest mound had the chiefs house on top of it.

What did they live in?

They lived in huts made of river cane thatched with palmetto or bark. Every family had their own household. They would build larger houses for counsils.

What did the Apalachee use to fight?

Fighting

Apalachee men would use many weapons to fight in war. They would fight with bows, spears, and wooden clubs. When getting ready for battle, the men painted their bodies with red ocher and put feathers in their hair.

What happened with the Spanish?

Spanish Encounter

Hernando de Soto was wintered in an Apalachee province in 1539. This was called the village of Anhaica. The Natives were not pleased with this. They treated them with much violence. They would almost constantly attacking the Spanish people.

What was the outcome of this conflict?

Natives Endangered

The Apalachee Indians became sick with new diseases from the Spanish. This slowly killed many many of the natives. The natives left moved north to avoid dieing, the population became slim. Today only 300 Apalachee descendents survived.

The Apalachee tribe has been around for a long time even in Florida. They were a very dominant and powerful tribe living in many villages. They were respected by many as there civilization was very advanced. Even though they lived on the land they were invaded and killed by disease.
