SOLAR POWER/ENERGY

What is solar power?

What are the start up costs?

Solar power is energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy.

Who invented it?

The costs all depend on the cost

of silicon. The price is approximatly

$1 per wat these days. It is less

expensive than coal.

How does it work?

Even though civilizations such as the romans

have been using solar energy for hundreds of years,

the first person to discover that certian materials

conduct a small amount of electricity when exposed

to light was Edmond Becquerel in 1839.

Crystals suck as copper or indium produce elecrical current when struck by light. This works because the electrons in the crystal move when exposed to light. This turns a good portion of light energy into electricity.

Where in the world is it used?

How much energy does it produce?

Where in the US is it used?

The total amount of solar energy recieved is 35,000 times the amount used by man.

1/3 absorbed is reflected back into space.

Solar energy is used all over the world and

on space on spaceships. The map shows where

the higher volume solar energy is being

farmed.

Solar energy is used pretty much

everywhere it can. The map shows

where the heaviest solar energy

is being farmed.

What's cool about it?

Pros and cons?

It's clean, and "it's not cold,

it's hot!"

What are the uses for it?

Pros: no polution, quiet, can be placed

in remote locations, and don't take up too

much space.

Cons: Bad weather=no power, can be expensive

at the beggining, and it's not always sunny.

Solar panels can go on roofs on almost every

building, go mounted on the ground, and can

have the electricity sent to be used for many

uses in cities.
