When Erin Gruwell found a racist drawing in her class, she compared it to the way the Nazis treated Jews during the Holocaust. She was shocked to discover that none of the children in the class knew about the Holocaust.
She introduced them to Anne Frank: The Diary of a Yong Girl. The students connected with the intense emotions in this book and started their own anonymous journals to record stories of drug use, physical and mental abuse, and violence in their own lives.
Erin collected extracts from the journals and, in 1999, she published them in a book entitled 'The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them'.
