Land and Climate

The northern two thirds of the country is in the Sahara. In most parts of the Sahara, less than one inch of rain falls in an average year.

History!!

  • People lived and farmed around the shores of lakes in the north central basin of the Sahara 7,000 years ago.
  • The french conquered Chad the last decade of the 19th century.
  • The country became independent in August 11, 1960
  • In 1914 the north of Chad was occupied by the French
  • Chad's first president was assassinated in a military coup in 1975

People and Culture

Most people in Chad live in small villages and rural areas.

  • The official languages are French and Arabic. Also there are 100 other languages spoken.
  • 54% of the people are Muslim and 35% are Christians
  • Most of Chad's economic, political, and social issues are around religious differences
  • Fish, either fresh or dried is an important element in the diet of the people in Chad!

Road Conditions!!

Roads are in poor conditions and dangerous. During the rainy seasons, the roads become impassable or are restricted by rain barriers. At night the roads are not lit. Also there are few traffic lights in Chad's main city N'Djamena, and they are usually out of service.

Entry / Exit Requirements

A valid passport and visa are required. Visitors need to check in with the National Police and they also need to obtain a registration stamp within 72 hours of arrival.

Safety!!

Americans and Europeans come off as wealthy to the people of Chad. Travelers are told to dress modestly, avoid wearing expensive jewlery and to not carry large amounts of money on them. Travelers are also told to not walk outside after dark and lock up their cars.

Medical Facilities

Medical places in Chad are very limited. Medicine is unavailable or in short supply. Travelers should carry any needed medicine with them.
