Most people in Chad live in small villages and rural areas.
Roads are in poor conditions and dangerous. During the rainy seasons, the roads become impassable or are restricted by rain barriers. At night the roads are not lit. Also there are few traffic lights in Chad's main city N'Djamena, and they are usually out of service.
A valid passport and visa are required. Visitors need to check in with the National Police and they also need to obtain a registration stamp within 72 hours of arrival.
Americans and Europeans come off as wealthy to the people of Chad. Travelers are told to dress modestly, avoid wearing expensive jewlery and to not carry large amounts of money on them. Travelers are also told to not walk outside after dark and lock up their cars.
Medical places in Chad are very limited. Medicine is unavailable or in short supply. Travelers should carry any needed medicine with them.
