  • Students will re-read the “Legend of the Kitchen God” from chapter one of The Kitchen God’s Wife, and infer why Winnie compares herself to the Kitchen God’s Wife in chapter fifteen.
  • Students will evaluate whether Winnie is justified in comparing Wen Fu to the Kitchen god, and herself to the Kitchen God’s Wife.

a. What is the moral of the story: why is the kitchen god worshipped?

b.Why does the Jade Emperor overlook the kitchen god’s wife?

Also consider the legend's relation to the following quote from chapter 15:

"Nobody worshipped me for living with Wen Fu. I was like the wife of the Kitchen God. Nobody worshipped her either. He got all the excuses. He got all the credit. She was forgotten” (Tan 150).

Write one paragraph considering the following quote from chapter 15:

  • In chapter fifteen, Winnie compares herself to the Kitchen God’s Wife. Is Winnie justified in comparing herself to the Kitchen God’s Wife? What did the Kitchen God do, that Wen Fu did not?
