Neurotransmitters

The chemicals assist in the transmission of signals from one neuron to another across synapses.

Skin and Sensory Receptors

Merkel receptor - close to surface of skin, reacts to pressure and texture

Meissner corpuscle - close to surface of skin, reacts to light touch

Ruffini cylinder - deep in dermis, involved in kinesthetic senses

Pacinian corpuscle - deep in dermis, reacts best to deep pressure touch and vibrations

Brain

The brain receives sensory input from the spinal cord and other nerves.

The brain is used for processing information from various sensory inputs and then coordinates motor outputs.

Eyes and the Optic Nerve

The optic nerve sends electrical impulses from the retina to the brain.

The Spinal Cord

The Nervous System

The spinal cord conducts sensory information from the nervous system to the brain. It also conducts motor information from the brain to various parts of the body.

Neuroglia

Neuroglia assist in maintaining the ion balance surrounding neurons and make an insulation barrier called a myelin sheath.

Neurons

Neurons are the basic information processing structures in the central nervous system.

Synapse

The synapse are connections between neurons. This is how information flows from one neuron to another.
