What is a blog?

A blog is a website that is easy to create and it is easy to post and publish ideas, resources, opinions and other updates (without any knowledge of codes!)

The most recent posted blog is always at the top and readers are allowed to comment on each entry.

How can blogs be used in the Language Arts classroom?

respond to reading

write reviews

journal for reflections

e-portfolio

posting assignments

present results of research

present projects

class portal

post homework /assignments

Why use a blog?

Students are able to:

  • give each other feedback (social interaction)
  • reflect on their work
  • find their work relevant as it is presented to a larger audience and also write more accurately and carefully
  • seeing their words published is a great motivator
  • offers an innovative way to engage students in reflective writing on classroom topics in a familiar medium
  • improve their online writing competence

When to wiki and when to blog?

Wiki

  • Wikis are collaborative
  • Everybody can add to and edit a wiki
  • Changes to wikis can be monitored
  • Work done on an individual page can be linked to a page created by someone else

Blog

  • Blogs are like a diary or journal that is written regularly
  • Once posted, only minor changes can be made to a blog
  • New topics are created the same way each time
  • Old blog entries can be archived
  • Blogs are usually written by individuals, but they may be created by a team

Comic Life is an easy to use software program. It is a way to use templates to create "comics" using images and text by simply dragging and dropping.

It reaches the visual learners and unleashes creativity!

Why use it in the classroom?

  • sequence events
  • retell an idea in a simpler form
  • show a point of view
  • retain knowledge through visualization
  • use critical thinking and problem solving
  • graphically organize information

Wikis

A wiki is a website that provides information on a topic with many interlinked web pages related to its content. Work done on an individual page can be linked to a page created by someone else. Wikis are unique because they are collaboratively created by many users who are free to edit or add material whenever necessary.

For Educators

Powerful digital media tools that a teacher can use in the classroom:

  • Blogs
  • Social Networking (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace)
  • Wikis
  • Photo sharing (Flickr)
  • Video sharing (Youtube, Teachertube)
  • Social bookmarking
  • Visualization Tool (Comic Life)
  • Feeds
  • Forums
  • Podcasts
