Thermodynamic Balance

Fungibility

Tidal Power is very efficient. It harnesses around 80-85% of the kinetic energy from the tides. Water is 1000x as dense as air, so this is a more efficient method than air turbines. No energy is required to operate tidal turbines, only to set them up.

Tidal energy will most likely be used to replace:

  • Coal
  • Oil
  • Gas
  • Potentially Nuclear

It is not as destructive on the environment as these types of energy sources, nor as dangerous.

This type of energy will not be able to completely replace the more conventional methods used today, but it may be used in countries with available coastline.

Tidal Energy

Economics

Social and Environmental Impacts

Tidal energy is extremely efficient over time, but the initial implementation is extremely expensive. It can range anywhere from 4 million dollars to set up a 65 kW site, to 11 million for a 1.2 MW site, BUT after that, it costs no money to run, and one barrage can last up to one hundred years.

It would start out being costly for consumers: 11-25 cents/kWh, and end up fairly cheap once widely used: 5-7 cents/kWh

Types of Tidal Energy

Ryleigh Byrne, Jared Waldron

Tidal Stream: The kinetic energy of water being extracted from the current

Tidal Range: Difference in height between the high and low tide

This type of power does not produce any type of emissions, so it will not hurt the atmosphere. On the other hand, Tidal Generators can hurt the wildlife that are around them. They also have an adverse effect on the tides, slowing them down sometimes.

They will take up real estate and

block waterways in some cases.

Reliability and Predictability

  • Facilities are long lasting
  • Energy output is easily predicted and measured

Set Backs

A 500 kW tidal stream plant was deployed 40 meters deep off the coast of Scotland in 2011. Within five months, it had delivered 100 MWh.

Fossil Fuels versus Alternative Energy

The use of fossil fuel is not only horrible for our planet, as everyone is aware, but will one day have completely run out.

The way to put a stop to this harm and ensure the availability of an energy source for the future is to embrace renewable energy, or alternative energy sources.

Tidal energy is a renewable source with no end in sight, and makes no global environmental impact.

Expense and Location

  • Despite savings over time, initial implementation is extremely costly
  • Location specific
  • Only 20 ideal locations found around the world
  • Constructing man made coastlines to suit is even more expensive and harmful
