COVER OF NOLI

- The cover of Noli Me Tangere was designed by Rizal. It is a ketch f explicit symbols. A woman’s head atop a Maria Clara bodice represents the nation and the women, victims of the social cancer.

- One of the causes of cancer symbolizes in the friar’s feet, outsize in relation to the woman’s head. The other aggrevating causes of oppression and discrimination are shown in the guard’s helmet and the iron chains, the teachers whip and the alferez’s scourge. A slight cluster of bamboo stands these are the people, forever in the background of

their own country’s history. These are across, a maze flowers and thorny plants, a flame; these are indicative in the religious policy, the misdirected ardor , the people strangled as the result of these all.

- Noli Me tangere contains 63 chapters and an epilogue

- Filipino patriot and lawyer who had been exiled due to his complicity in the cavite munity of 1872, read avidly the Noli and was very much impressed by the author.

THE TITLE OF THE NOVEL

Noli Me Tangere

March 5,1887

– Latin praise which means “ Touch Me Not”

– Rizal, writing to Felix R. Hidaldo in French said: “ Noli Me Tangere, words taken from the Gospel of Saint Luke , signify “Do not touch me”

- In siting the Biblical Source, Rizal made a mistake. It should be the gospel of St.John

- “ Touch me not; I am not yet ascended to my Father, but go to my brethren, and say unto them , I ascend unto my father, and your father; and to my God and to your God”.

- Rizal dedicated Noli Me Tangere to the Phillipines- “ To his fatherland”

NOLI ME TANGERE PUBLISHED BERLIN(1887)

Bleack winter of 1886 was memorable in the life of rizal

Reasons :

- It was painful episode for he was hungry,sick and despondent in a strange city

- It brought him great joy, after enduring so much sufferings, because his first novel NOLI ME TANGERE came of the press in MARCH,1887 .

VIOLA, SAVIOR OF NOLI

Dr. Maximo Viola

- Savior of Noli , Legendary Santa Claus , friend of Rizal From Bulacan and loaned him the needed funds to publish the novel.

- After the Christmas season, Rizal put finishing touches on his novel , deleted certain manuscripts , including the whole chapter – “Elias and Salome”

- Noli was finished and ready for printing

- A printing shop which chargest the lowest rate, that is 300 pesos for 2 copies of the novel

- Noli Me Tangere came of the press.

- As Rizal’s token of appreciation and gratitude, He gave viola the galley proof of Noli carefully rolled around the pen which he used in writing it and a complimentary copy , with the following encryption: “ To my dear friend , Maximo Viola ” , the first to read and appreciate my work – Jose Rizal”

THE WRITING OF NOLI

- Toward the end of 1884 Rizal began writing the novel in Madrid and finished about one-half of it .

- Rizal went to Paris in 1885 completing his studies in the central university of Madrid he continue writing and finished one-half of the second half

- He finished the last fourth of the novel in Germany

-Wrote the last few chapters in Whilhelmsfeld in April-June,1886

-Rizal made the final revision on the manuscript of noli in Berlin, February 1886

SYNOPSIS OF NOLI

- Noli Me tangere contains 63 chapters and an epilogue

- The most tragic story of the novel is the story of SISA

THE MISSING CHAPTER OF NOLI

- In the original manuscript , there was a chapter entited “ ELIAS and SALOME” which follows Chapter XXIV

- The chapter was deleted by Rizal so that it was not included in the printed Novel

- By reducing the pages of the manuscript the cost of printing will also reduced

RIZAL'S FRIEND PRAISE NOLI

- Rizal’s friend hailed the novel with glowing colors

- Numerous congratulatory letters received by Rizal from his friend , Blumentritt was very significant.

- Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor impressed by the author of the Noli who is Rizal.

CHARACTERS OF NOLI

Noli Me Tangere was a true story of the Phillippine conditions during the last decades of Spanish rule

Maria Clara – was Leonor Rivera although in real life she became unfaithful and married an Englishman

Ibarra and Elias – represented Rizal Himself

Tasio – philosopher was Rizal’s elder brother paciano

Padre Salvi – was adentified by Rizalist’s as Padre Antonio Piemavieja, the hated agustinian friar in cavite who was killed by the patriots during revolution

Capitan Tiago – waofs Captain Hilario Sunico of San Nicolas

Donya Victorina – was Donya Agustina Medel

Basilio and Crispin – were the crisostomo brother’s of Hagonoy

Padre Damaso – typical of domineering friar during the days of Rizal, who was arrogant, immoral, and anti-Filipino

RIZAL SUSPECTED AS FRENCH SPY

- During the printing of the Noli, A rare incident happen to Rizal

- Rizal had made frequent visits to the little towns in the rural areas , thereby arousing the German Government suspicion that he was a French spy
