"The coded language that holds women back at work"
-BBC
Workplace language contains gendered assumptions that influence who we employ, how we evaluate individuals, and who we promote, putting certain people at a disadvantage.
Women feel more more ease applying for jobs with words like 'interpersonal' and 'understand.' Hiring choices are more likely to consider their sociability ('friendliness') and morals ('trustworthiness'). Women's performance feedback is more ambiguous (and consequently less actionable) than men's.
thoughts
It may be difficult to imagine that minor adjustments in verbs, pronouns, adjectives, or even phraseology may result in significant changes in workplace gender balance.
I believe the onus is on the corporations to adapt, not on the women really evaluating these things correctly and valuing them equally, regardless of whether the behaviour is demonstrated by a man or a woman.
How ice hockey legend Angela Ruggiero battled gender discrimination to make history
“I was clearly good enough to be on the team. I wasn’t the best, but I was good enough,” (Ruggiero).
“It was because I was a girl and they didn’t want the ponytail sticking out the back of the helmet at the tournament,"(Ruggiero).
