The Life Cycle of a Leech

In the cocoon

There are about 1000 eggs in the cocoon. It can take as long as 9 months or as short as 1 week for them to hatch.

Hatching

From the egg the leech hatches and attaches themselves to their caretakers body. After their 1st meal the leech becomes independent.

Reproducing

Leeches are hermaphrodites which mean they are both genders. The reproduce when the female bites off the males sperm sack to make babies.

Young Leech

Adult

The average size of an adult leech is 15mm-30mm but some can reach up to 200mm. Adult leeches can reproduce and they can live for a month or a year.

Leeches are epimorphic, which means they don't change fundamentally which means their body doesn't change much in appearance through growth.

Their are 2 types of leeches, the first eats a lot and digests quickly, the second doesn't eat so much and has slow digestion.
