Dress Code Issues in Healthcare

Naturopathic Medicine

This can be an issue in the health care environment when the client has to wear the hospital gown. This can be seen as a breech to their code of modesty. Because their dress is closely tied to their religious beliefs, this can be a very upsetting position to be put in. Health care professionals have to be aware and sensitive of this topic, and be willing to adapt for the client.

Dress Code

Many Hutterite people are starting to appreciate alternative medicine. This is something that medical professionals should take into consideration when treating Hutterite people.

"Naturopathic medicine is a distinct primary health care system that blends modern scientific knowledge with traditional and natural forms of medicine. The naturopathic philosophy is to stimulate the healing power of the body and treat the underlying cause of disease."

-www.cand.ca (Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors

The Hutterite people believe in a modest, simple and uniform dress code. This originated in their Anabaptist beginnings in 16th century Europe. The early traditional style originates from the German and Austrian national costume, which includes black Lederhosen, a Dirndl, and a kerchief-style head cover. The size of polka dots signifies which colony the women belong to.

Behaviors of Men and Women

When a Hutterite couple gets married, the women leaves her colony to join his. Because of their modest beliefs, the women are not supposed to interact with men other than her husband, and the men in her own colony. Some Hutterite elderly women, have strong opinions on how they want things to happen.

Behavioral Issues in Health Care

A Quick History

This can be an issue in health care because the woman and man may not allow any male health care professionals to assist the woman in her care. This can also be an issue because her family’s view on health and health care may be different than those of her husband’s family. This may lead to conflict.

Hutterites are a faith group stemming from the Radical Reformation of the 16th century. Both Hutterites and Mennonites are Anababtists which believe that baptism is only valid when he or she makes a conscious choice to follow Jesus.

Hutterite history involves many different migrations over a period of four-and-a-half centuries.

Germany -> Moravia (Czech Republic) -> Hungary -> Transylvania (Romania) -> Ukraine -> the Dakotas (USA) -> During WW1 to the Canadian Prairies

According to Stats Canada's 2006 Census, there are over 30,000 Hutterite colonies in Canada, with about half in Alberta alone.

Most Hutterites speak a specific dialect of German, often known as "Hutterite German". Many Hutterite people can speak some level of English. In general, the men can speak better English.

Language Issues in Healthcare

This can be an issue in the health care setting when health care professionals are trying to communicate with the client, who may not fully understand English. Often times, a family member of the client will try and translate the message, but it is hard to say if the message was correctly translated.
