Literary Devices

What is a Literary Device?

A technique a writer uses to produce a special effect in their writing. When employed properly, different literary devices help readers to appreciate, interpret and analyze a literary work.

Allusion

An Allusion is a passing REFERENCE in a work of literature to another literary or historical work, figure, event, or literary passage.

A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something, or creates a range of associations, beyond itself.

Foreshadowing is an advance sign or warning of what is to come in the future.

Irony

Irony

a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.

Examples of Situational Irony

  • A fire station burns down.
  • A marriage counselor gets a divorce.
  • A police station being robbed.

Metaphor

Metaphor is a figure of speech which makes an implicit, implied or hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated but share some common characteristics.

A comparison that does NOT use "like" or "as."

Imagery

Imagery is a visual description of an object or a scene. An IMAGE or picture of it, especially one that is particularly detailed and vivid.

Analogy

A comparison of a subject to something that is similar to it in order to clarify the subject's nature, purpose, or function.
