Mars

Mars compared to Earth-

Mars is about one-third the size of Earth Mars is 4220 miles (6791 km) in diameter (Earth - 7926 miles). It has one-tenth the mass of Earth because it is less dense.

There Is Frozen Water on Mars

Video Dated 31-07-2008

Mars has the largest canyon in the solar system.

It would reach from Los Angeles to Chicago if it was on Earth!

Olympus Mons, a 550 km wide volcano, is the largest volcano in the solar system and covers an area about the size of Arizona. It is 27 km high in contrast to Mt Everest on Earth at 8.85 km.

The planet is named after the Roman God of War, Mars.

A day on mars is only 37 minutes longer than a day on Earth

Moons

Mars has two tiny moons, Phobos and Deimos,

which are thought to be captured asteroids.

Deimos

You could launch yourself

off Deimos by running, because

the escape velocity is only

7 mph (11 km/hr).

Phobos

Phobos orbits Mars three

times a day (Mars day), it

is so far the only moon to

be discovered that goes

around a planet faster

than that planet turns.

Phobos is only 6000 km off the surface of Mars, the closest moon to its planet in the Solar System.

The discovery of the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, occurred in 1877 when American astronomer Asaph Hall, Sr. identified them after a long search, although their existence had been speculated before.
