Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr (Democratic-Republicans) run for president against John Adams and Charles Pinckney (Federalists) in 1800

John Adams ran dirty, using slander and personal attacks on the Democratic-Republicans. Said, " A vote for Jefferson is a vote against God."

Jefferson and Burr won the primary election ensuring the presidency to a Democratic-Republican

Jefferson and Burr tied, both with 73 votes

The vote went to the House of Representatives for the final say.

The House decided Jefferson won the election by one vote

Alexander Hamilton advocated for Jefferson saying he was the safer choice.
