Character Map of Great Expectations

Mrs. Joe

Pirrip/Philip/Pip

Mrs. Joe is the overbearingly fastidious wife of Joe Gargery. She is also Pip's much older sister. For most of Pip's life, she has been the one to take care of him, due to their deceased parents.

Estella

In the story, Pip is an orphan. Because of the mercy of his sister, she takes him in with her husband Joe. He meets a young, beautiful girl named Estella and falls in love with her. She treats him quite rudely, and she causes heart ache for Pip as he gets older.

Estella is the niece of Miss Havisham and the love interest of Pip. Although she doesn't treat Pip very nicely, he still falls in love with her nonetheless. She is ordered by Miss Havisham to break the hearts of many men.

Estella grew up sad and alone after marrying twice. She is very depressed and doesn't know what to do. She soon meets Pip again, and leaves with him- only to never separated from him again.

Estella faces a Man v.s. Fate conflict. As she see's Pip one day, she notices that he has a child with him, and assumes it's his child. She gives him one last goodbye and she decides to leave.

She experiences this conflict while she argues in a loud fight with Orlick. She then watches Pip and Orlick get into a fist fight. Not knowing what she should do. Because of the emotional stress, she then faints.

Mrs. Joe experiences a Man v.s. Fate in this story. She happens to get attacked by Orlick and then becomes mute due to the beating.

Pip experiences a Man v.s. Man conflict. Because he fancies the beautiful Estella, and her guardian, Miss Havisham, urges her to break his heart, Pip has to endure many hurt feelings for himself.

Pip experiences Man v.s. Self as he lives with Magwitch. Pip begins to fall into debt, and he struggles very hard to not spend Magwitch's money to pay it all off. He fights very hard, and he manages not to use the money.

Miss Havisham

Uncle Pumblechook

Abel Magwitch

Dolge Orlick

Miss Havisham is the aunt of Estella, and she likes to influence her niece to break the hearts of men with her beauty and her cold attitude.

The day laborer in Joe’s forge, Orlick is an embodiment of evil. He is responsible for the attack on Mrs. Joe, and he almost succeeds in his attempt to murder Pip.

Also known as the convict Pip had shown kindness to in the marshes where he used to live, this man is actually a man with a lot of money, and because Pip was very kind to him that day that he spent as a convict, he uses that money to give Pip a life of a fortunate man.

The arrogant uncle of Pip is he, and what a foul man he is... He took credit for Pip’s rise in social status, even though he has nothing to do with it, since Magwitch, not Miss Havisham, is Pip’s secret benefactor.

Miss Havisham experiences a Man v.s. Fate conflict. One day, as she's living at home, her dress catches fire. Luckily, Pip is there are puts out the fire immediately.

Miss Havisham is visited by Pip one day, and she internally feels horribly about trying to get Estella to break Pip's heart. She finds herself depressed because of her guilty actions. She then apologizes to him, and fortunately, Pip forgives her mercifully.

Orlick is a very static character. I'm not sure he has any internal conflicts...

As Magwitch finally get's too old in his jail cell, and he dies at peace. He faces a Man v.s. Fate conflict.

Man v.s. Man: Because of his malevolent feelings towards Pip, Orlick is often seen trying to hurt him and possibly even murder.

Magwitch had faced a Man v.s. Self conflict when he brings himself to use his money to have Jaggers, the lawyer, find Pip and associate with him.

Man v.s. Society. Uncle Pumblechook is obsessed with money and fame, so he fights his way to the top with taking unnecessary credit of Pip's fortune.

Uncle Pumblechook deals with his greed inside himself, yet doesn't really care that he's selfish the way his is.

Joe Gargery

Joe Gargery married Mrs. Joe. He is the brother in-law of Pip, technically. He is a blacksmith and planned to make Pip his apprentice.

Jaggers

Joe faces a Man v.s. Man conflict when Pip decides to take the day off to visit Miss Havisham. Because Orlick demands a day off as well and insults Mrs. Joe, Joe gets into a fist fight with Orlick.

The powerful, foreboding lawyer hired by Magwitch to supervise Pip’s help to the upper class. He is one of the most vicious lawyers that deal with terrifying criminals; however, he's a great lawyer, and scares criminals just as much.

External Conflict:

Internal Conflict:

Jagger did give Miss Havisham Estella to keep the young girl from a life of crime, considering her father, Magwitch, is a serious criminal. He found the goodness and did a kind act towards Estella because of it.

Jaggers has to deal with his work as a lawyer. This portrays a Man v.s. Society conflict. Although he works with many criminals, it must be difficult to maintain a very demanding job.

Biddy

A simple, kindhearted country girl, Biddy first befriends Pip when they attend school together. After Mrs. Joe is attacked and becomes an invalid, Biddy moves into Pip’s home to care for her.

External Conflict:

Internal Conflict:

As Mrs. Joe falls ill, Biddy comes to take care of her. This show's a Man v.s. Fate conflict.

Biddy comes and begins to teach Joe how to write, and eventually marries him, despite the small amount of feelings she had for Pip, and the returned feelings from him. This portrays a very contradicted conflict.
