Multiculturism act
- 1988, a legislative framework was created to the existing policy of multiculturalism.
- The policy from 1976 needed revisions.
- This was to increase Canada's diverse racial and ethnic composition.
- This protected cultural heritage,
- Reduce discrimination
- Encourage implementation of multicultural programs
This lead Canada to be the first country to pass a national multiculturism law.
This law was highly controversial
- Due to the incompatibility with Canada's charter of rights and freedoms.
This act allowed 'secret' trials which included
- Preemptive detention
- expansive security
- surveillance powers.
