A brief history of immigration from across the globe to Canada.

The white paper

Multiculturism policy

- Multiculturism policy (1976)

- Prime minister Pierre Trudeau announced multiculturism.

- A bilingual framwork was used as an official government policy

- This policy was to preserve cultural freedom.

- Government committed to support by assisting cultural groups.

- Also by encouraging intercultural exchange and assisting in the learning of English and French

- 24 Canadians died.

- The terrorist attack (9/11) caused US to close its airspace.

- This lead to hundreds of planes to divert to airports in Canada.

- This then lead Canada to pass an anti terrorism law

- The White Paper (1966)

- Policy document by the government to review immigration and to recommend restructuring.

- It was suggested Canada focus on recruiting qualified immigrants

- Also to tighten controls on sponsored immigration.

- Even though it was critisized, the foundations were laid in 1967

Sir John A. Macdonald.

- First act of Canadian immigration.

- Sir John A. Macdonald wanted to

enhance Canada's natural resources

by establishing immigration.

- Since then, race, desirability, and

integration has shaped immigration.

Multiculturism act

- 1988, a legislative framework was created to the existing policy of multiculturalism.

- The policy from 1976 needed revisions.

- This was to increase Canada's diverse racial and ethnic composition.

- This protected cultural heritage,

- Reduce discrimination

- Encourage implementation of multicultural programs

This lead Canada to be the first country to pass a national multiculturism law.

This law was highly controversial

- Due to the incompatibility with Canada's charter of rights and freedoms.

This act allowed 'secret' trials which included

- Preemptive detention

- expansive security

- surveillance powers.
