The Giver Symbolism Project

Resolution

Symbol 7 : 360

For my final symbol which respresents the resolution i chose a 360. This is because when I was reading the last few pages of the book, it felt like it came full circle, this is because Jonas' first memory was him on top of a hill on a sled sliding down. And at the end of the book he finds himself on top of a snowy hill with a sled waiting for him there for him and gabriel to slide down while he hears music at the bottom of the hill. Im asuming its Christmas music because its december.

Jonas' Emotional High Point

(Climax)

Symbol 6:Death

I chose death as the high climax

point in the book. This is because

Jonas' High point comes in when

they decide that they

haveto realese Gabe and Jonas freaks out and

takes Gabe with Jonas on his Journey to

find "Elsewhere" and going on that jounrey

they are also basically facing death rigth in

the eyes. And the journey is long and hard but they got to an end...

Jonas' Journey, Characterization-End

Symbol 4: Knight

For my 4th symbol and for Jonas' end characterization. i chose a knight. This is because at the end of Jonas' Characterization you see that he is amazingly brave and has lots of courage and doesnt back down on anything. Similar to a knight, knights never back down on any job whether its saving a princess, or slaying a dragon, they are filled with courage

Jonas' Main Conflict

Symbol 5: Martin Luther King Jr

I chose Martin Luther King Jr for Conflict. This

is because Person vs Society, Jonas is trying to get rid of sameness in his community. And Jonas doesnt like how no one in his community has feeling or at least strong ones or can't even see colour. Martin Luther King Jr fought for Black rights, basically wanting everyone including darker skinned people the same rights as everybody else and not to be treated as slavess or disrespected. Similar to what Jonas wanted for his community.

Jonas' Journey, Characterization-

Beginning

Symbol 2: Robot

For the beginning of the book along with Jonas’ Characterization I chose the symbol to be a robot. This is because in the beginning of the story Jonas and the Community around him are so dull, and they obey every rule without questioning them, similar to a robot. Also Jonas doesn’t really seem like an emotional person at the beginning, until later on…

Jonas' Journey, Characterization-

Middle

Symbol 3: Space

For Jonas’ characterization in the middle of the book I chose space, this is because Jonas now at the middle of the book has learned a lot of info, but still has much, much more to learn. Alike to humans and space, we know lots of info on space, but there is still much more waiting for us deeper in space to learn about in the future.

The Giver Symbol

Symbol 1: Owl

For The first symbol and the first look at the book, I chose an Owl, this is because looking at the cover of the book there is a wise old man on it, and when you think about old people, you think there experienced and very wise and have lots of info to tell or “Give”. And Owls are know as very wise animals that we respect, also owls

have large eyes which mean they can see many things which relates to them being so wise and respected similar to the elderly.
