Reactions of Bases to our Skin

  • The bases react with our oils and fatty tissues.
  • This can lead to skin extensives and to subtaneous tissue.
  • When strong bases touch the skin it is able to burn as badly as strong acids would.

Reactions of Acids to our Skin

Questions:

  • What are the normal affects of acidic damage or damages from bases?
  • Chemical burns, scarring, or your skin will feel slippery

  • Why is this affective?
  • It can cause the ph of your skin to alkaline or ooverly acidic.

  • Strong acids can cause the skin to melt. shrink, and shrivel up
  • React by the pores of your skin can close up
  • Can donate protons which can change the chemical structire of you protiens.
  • Denaturing; (taking away natural qualities)

The Impact of Bases and Acids on Skin

By: Lindsey Truong

Where They Normally Found?

What is being done about this?

  • Tropical treatment with weak acids such as 5%
  • Regimens such as barrer products and mositurizer
  • To help zinc-oxide based barriers coat and shield the skin from moisture and irritants

Bases:

  • the most common/ strongest bases are calcium hydroxiode, sodium hydroxide, and pottasium hydroxide

Acids:

  • Any ionic inorganic acid is terrible for you skin even the organic acids aren't that great for your skin but they won't burn through you skin like nitric acid

Why Should We Care?

  • Can cause severe chemical burns
  • Damage the protiens in your skin
  • The ph skin becomes too acidic or basic
  • (Dryness and Flakiness)
  • Increse chances inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and acne
