To develop debating and language skills through the history of Hadrian's Wall as part of their Romans module.

activities

Hadrian's wall (user's own) - using their corner projection they showed two sides of the wall.

Different roman scene images (found online) to look further at

the period.

  • Pupils were marched down to the space, and enlisted into the army on the way down -

they had no choice. Teachers acting as corporals.

  • Enter space and 'It's a long way to Tipperary' playing, the corporals were bawling at them, there were

sounds and pictures of crowds waving them off.

  • Looking at the picture of soldiers on the floor, each pupil picked a soldier they wanted to be and stepped onto them to become that soldier.
  • Pupils then were spread out in the space and had to close their eyes - when they opened them there was a new image on the wall. Neither teacher spoke as they listened to the sound of a helicopter. Pupils were asked "what can you see" and they all said "tiretracks", but it was actually a birds eye view of the trenches and no-mans land.
  • They then stood in silence in a circle, the teachers touched each child on the shoulder and asked "why are you going to war?" - some said "we will win", some said "I am scared".
  • Voices reduced to whispers, then grew louder and louder to create a soundscape.
  • Then they went into battle... and then the Tipperary music returned to mark the end of the session.

Tips & tricks

from the 4D network

  • Pupils stood at both sides of the wall in two groups and debated whether or not to invade.
  • Then travelled through Rome to Claudius' palace before

he was due to invade and acted as his advisors.

  • Then a teacher arrives as Julius Caesar

abstract themes

tags tags tags!

outcome

Use tags systematically across the school so it's easier to share and re-use each other's content.

Starting your immersive journey in the classroom using an object that you then bring into the space has great impact.

Pupils enjoyed 'becoming' the soldier and were confident in playing the

roles. The experience was much more profound for them because they 'became' the soldier, identified with them.

Use abstract themes like Ambient Lights or Time Tunnel to help set the scene and gain focus

outcome

take on a character

The drama aspect helped to immerse them into the activities - they "become Claudius' advisers, they're not Carl or James... all that kind of approach just gets them straight into it".

Putting yourself in character during a session helps deepen the immersive effect and manage behaviour without breaking the spell.

easing pupils in

editing tools

If some of your pupils are scared to go in at first, find content of characters or places they are familiar with (eg. storybooks) to lessen the jump.

Every two months practitioners from across the 4D network come together to share practice and ideas about how they are using their immersive spaces for experiential learning.

A big thank you to Kensington Primary for hosting us this month!

Free tools like iMovie, Windows Movie Maker or are quick ways to edit something before you upload it to the system.

Y6 - 1930s cinema trip

Take the pupils into space to experience the journey and build vocabulary and imagination.

  • In small groups pupils had to discover which foods were

in the picnic by using the interactive floor.

  • Pupils then listed what they found and categorised it into

healthy or unhealthy.

  • Other activities then took place outside of the space.

Kensington Community Primary School

content

aim

Building new vocabulary, particularly WOW words and adjectives through an immersive journey back in time to the 1930s.

Rocket launch, the Moon, looking back at earth, footprints in the moon's surface (found online through NASA image galleries - http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/imagegallery/)

4D Drifting through space

Interactive floor revealing 9 items to choose from for their kit bag

Dressing up materials for pupils

Craft materials to make rocket.

outcome

content

Pupils left with a basic understanding of the different food groups and identified with the familiar character of Mr. Tumble on the walls, which supported deeper learning throughout the rest of the day outside of the immersive space.

4D Machinery

4D Time Tunnel Backward

1930s cinema on wall, old-fashioned carpet on floor (user content found online)

Charlie Chaplin movie on wall (user content)

1930s film posters (physical around the school)

activities

  • Pupils arrived in the space dressed for space! Tin foil, helmets etc.
  • Using the reveal on the interactive floor, they had each choose

what they would pack in their kit bag. Mix of sensible and silly

items!

  • They then got in the spaceship after view of NASA and sound and lighting were used to create the illusion of the rocket taking off.
  • Journeyed into space, using pictures of NASA and earth in distance, and landed on the moon.
  • Throughout the school they put 1930s film posters pupils had made before the class.
  • Enter a time machine through 4D Machinery theme to go to the 1930s,

pupils turning cogs on walls etc. to make it work - quite drama based.

  • Travel to a portal (4D Time Tunnel) that lands them in a cinema,

building vocab around what they could see, hear, feel.

  • Pupils ducked down to land, at which point 2 staff got changed into

1930s cinema stewards and changed space to 1930s cinema theme.

  • Pupils had to buy tickets, find their seat. More discussion around what

is similar and different from today's cinemas.

  • Curtain opens and Charlie Chaplin movie starts. During interval stewards offer snacks and popcorn.
  • After film finishes they return through the portal and time machine back to 2015 and staff changed back.

outcome

"It was just the experience that they had, which you couldn't have created in the classroom." It took a while to gather the images, but they loved it and were all engaging with the activities.

Dreamlist would be an acoustic, vibrating couch so that they could actually take off!

starring in april 2015...

outcome

  • Acting as stewards allowed the teachers to manage behaviour in the class more easily through drama approaches (eg. hush, stay quiet in the cinema!) and without breaking the spell.
  • Pupils loved the experience and discussion support vocabulary development. Some pupils were reluctant to write when back in class, but the movie posters helped to extend the memory of the immersive experience.

SOCIAL MEDIA

time time time!

As we are always aware, time is of the essence for teachers and planning! Sharing ways to create 4D-ready content so you can just upload and start would be useful - we will share our content guide more widely with schools so they gain access to some quick and easy editing tools.

Tweet or post your immersive lessons using #4Dexchange and we'll share it with the network and on our monthly Storify.

Or search for #4Dexchange to get fresh ideas for your class!

yes to content sharing... in principle!

use our developing resource sites

Schools would be keen to share content across sites, but only if this could be done at the same time as uploading to the system. We are working on a cloud sharing solution for this, and will ensure it requires minimum additional actions by end users.

ability to upload content offline would be wonderful!

Pinterest theme boards: https://www.pinterest.com/4dcreative/

4D creative blog: http://www.4dcreative.co.uk/news/

Storify channel: https://storify.com/4dcreative

The offline content editor is coming!! We had confirmation from users that this would dramatically increase capacity to upload content and encourage people to upload more of their own.

From WWI to Mr. Tumble, voiceover dragons to rocket takeoffs, lots of brilliant ideas around staff roles, content creation and extending experiences beyond the immersive space were shared!

maths & science remain the trickiesT to plan for

If you would like to attend the next 4Dexchange or organise one in your area, get in touch with Inés on ines@4dcreative.co.uk

Our users are confident in using their spaces for creative writing, PSHE and history but many would like more ideas and pathways for maths, science and geography. We are focusing our resource development on these subjects and are currently designing training and workshops for these areas for the autumn term. Stay tuned!

One pupil, a selective mute, who the lesson had been partially

tailored to as she likes dinosaurs, once in the space returning the egg she began

talking very eagerly about the story of the egg and the mum dinosaur.
