Sonnet 5

Those Hours, that with gentle work did frame

The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell,

Will play the tyrants to the very same

And that unfair which fairly doth excel:

For never-resting Time leads Summer on

To hideous Winter and confounds him there;

Sap check'd with frost and lusty leaves quite gone,

Beauty o'ersnow'd and bareness every where:

Then, were not summer's distillation left,

A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,

Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft,

Nor it, nor no remembrance what it was.

But flowers distill'd though they with winter meet,

Leese but their show; their substance still lives sweet.

Rhetorical Devices

Extended Metaphor- Shakespeare uses the idea that perfume (or a Child) will remind us of our youth and that it can't be destroyed.

Beauty's effect with beauty were bereft,

Nor it, nor no remembrance what it was:

But flowers distilled, though they with winter meet,

Leese but their show; their substance still lives sweet.

We will lose our sense of beauty if we don't have something to remind us of it. But if we have something to remind us of beauty and youth then in our older years we will never forget the past.

For never-resting time leads summer on

To hideous winter, and confounds him there;

Sap checked with frost, and lusty leaves quite gone,

Beauty o'er-snowed and bareness every where:

Then were not summer's distillation left,

A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass,

Those hours, that with gentle work did frame

The lovely gaze where every eye doth dwell,

Will play the tyrants to the very same

And that unfair which fairly doth excel;

Time doesn't stop and we all grow older and uglier. We lose the appearance of our youth as we get older. If we didn't have something to remind us of our youth then we would live out our days unhappily.

In the first hours or years of our lives we are beautiful and everybody likes to look at us. However as time goes on we start to age because time never stops moving.
