A major icon of Mythology is Joseph Campbell. Campbell is the creator of the Hero’s Journey. The Hero’s Journey, describes the typical adventure of the archetype known as “The Hero”.
Carl Gustav Jung is a major contributor to Archetypes. Jung defined twelve primary types that symbolize basic human motivations. Each type has its own set of values, meanings and personality traits.
These traits are:
Myth: Stories told in ancient cultures to explain a practice, belief, or natural occurrence.
Example: The Greek myth of Persephone explains the changes in seasons.
Archetype: a typical character, an action or situation that seems to represent such universal patterns of human nature. “Perfect example of something”
Example: Shrek fit the archetype of a social outcast until Fiona came along.
“One day, when Epimetheus laid sleeping, Pandora stole the key and opened the box.
Out flew every kind of disease and sickness, hate and envy, and all the bad things that people had never experienced before. Pandora slammed the lid closed, but it was too late. All the bad things were already out of the box. They flew away, out into the world.”
FACT: Pandora’s Box embodies Myth and Archetypes criticism because it demonstrates how myths are used to explain the unexplainable. Out of this box came out various bad things, as an attempt to explain how bad things came into the world. Myth’s find a way to talk about our hopes and fears and values.
