Python Invasion!
Non-native pythons have been introduced to Florida's Everglades. This non-native animal has caused the loss of native flora and fauna. The Burmese python was brought to Florida normally as pets. As they grew the owners would become overwhelmed by its size. Owners would set free the giant pythons into the Everglades. These giant snakes soon started to repopulate and become settled into the Everglades. Now they are at the top of the food chain. The Burmese python is one of the largest snakes in the world, meaning they have very few predators.
1.
Pet owners originally brought pythons to Florida as pets, but then released them when the got too large.
2.
In 2002 one of the first spottings of the Burmese python with no owner in Florida was reported.
3.
The United States imported more than 144,000 Burmese pythons for pets or zoos in the past 5 years.
4.
Pythons have been seen fighting with alligators in the Everglades, they can win but they also loss. This adds to the loss of fauna.
5.
Prey on native mangrove fox squirrels and wood storks. Compete for space with eastern indigo snakes.
6.They have caused massive decline in small animals, even eating small children!
7.
Can grow up to 17.7 feet long, meaning they need more food to eat and more space, choking out other animals.
8.
Some hybrids between two pythons may produce a very deadly predator, even if sterile.
9.
They are long lived, have very few deaths from starvation, high birth-rate (90 eggs per clutch), can move/travel long distances, giving them a larger range to live and reproduce.
10.
In net stores thy sell for $65-80 or at a trade show for $20, many are bought as impulse buys.
11.
The Everglades are the perfect habitat for the Burmese python to succeed.
12.
The more the population of pythons grow in Florida the more ecological problems Florida organizations will have containing the Burmese pythons and eradicating them.
13.
These pythons could live in 13 other states other than Florida, this means they could cause more damage to other animals elsewhere.
14.
Can find/hunt prey any where, up a tree, water, or down a hole. Making them a super hunter.
15.
Salt water normally detours reptiles, but not for pythons, making it harder to try to keep them away.
Organizations that work to solve the python invasion:
Python Patrol is a group of people who want to stop the pythons from spreading instead of just killing them all. Also the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, University of Florida, and Python Science Support Team (PSST) are looking for ways to eradicate or fully remove the Burmese python from Florida's Everglades.
What is being done to solve the python invasion:
Organizations are using radiotelemetry to find how pythons use the habitat they are in and how much they travel (the pythons are injected with radio transmitters to do this). Implanted pythons lead to other pythons who are then captured. Most captured pythons are euthanized, all nests that are found are destroyed. PSST uses pheromones to attract males who then are lured into traps and euthanized. Others are training dogs to sniff-out the pythons, while Florida has put fines and fees on buying/owning pythons as pets.
What can we do?
Lastly!
5.
Donate money to python patrol to help with research.
3.
Don't let pet pythons loose or let a friend let them loose.
1.
Discourage friends from buying pythons as pets.
2.
If you see a python (in Florida) call Animal Control.
4.
Join contest like Python Challenge to hunt (kill) pythons.
