Deciduous Forest, Hokkaido Japan

By Azy L and Erin S

Location and Description

Location and Description

The Deciduous Forest bio-me in Japan is found in Hokkaido. It has two different types of soil, sandy soil and airfoils. Some landforms founds here include the Mount Rishiri, lakes, hills, and rivers.

Climate and Features

Climate and Features

The deciduous forest climate features the four seasons, winter, summer, spring, and, autumn. This biome typically gets about 30-60 inches of rain, primarily during the summer and fall. The harsh winters are redeemed by the warm spring. This process allows plants to survive the cold winters. The climate becomes warmer due to global warming,. Experts are also expecting to see the number of typhoons to increase as well. The Japanese temperate deciduous forests are extremely vulnerable to the typhoon impact as it can significantly change the entire forest structure and its function.

Abiotic and Biotic Factors

Abiotic and Biotic Factors

Some biotic factors you can find that live in Hokkaido are the plants Yeddo Spruce, Sakhalin fir, and the Japanese Oak. Some animals that live there are Ezo Fukuro, Shima enaga, and the Hokkaido red fox

Plant Adaptions

Some adaptions that the trees such as the Japanese Oak has are its broad leaves. Their leaves helps them produce more glucose through photosynthesis. When it gets colder, the trees cut off the water to their leaves so the leaves turn a red color.

Animals Adaptions

The Ezo Fukuro is an owl that uses its coloring to help it blend in with its surroundings.

Animals

The Red Fox has long hind legs that help it jump onto its prey with great precision

The Shima Enaga has white coloring that helps it blend in with the surrounding snow

Abiotic Factors

The Abiotic Factors in the deciduous forest include water, air, soil, rocks, and sunlight

- Plants produce the oxygen in the atmosphere and consumers consume it creating a cycle.

- The plant roots need soil for nutrients and the roots help keep the soil in place, which prevents erosion.

- Plants absorb Carbon Dioxide from the atmosphere, minimizing climate change and habitat destruction.

Natural Resources

Natural Resources

Some natural resources you can find in the Deciduous forest in japan are mainly trees. However you can also find flora and fauna as well. Without trees as a main resource to humans we would not survive because we need the oxygen they provide for us.

Environmental Changes

Environmental Changes

70% of the Blakiston’s fish owl nesting sites are not protected by the National Park. The forest is used for logging and for the grazing of horses and cattle. The plants being harvested for medicine is also affecting the wildlife. The government tries to keep human interactions between the brown bear and the humans as little as possible to keep the bears safe.
