It is the cause. Yet I'll not shed her blood;

Nor scar that whiter skin of hers than snow,

And smooth as monumental alabaster.

music example

A wise old owl lived in an oak

The more he saw the less he spoke

The less he spoke the more he heard.

FareWELL the TRANquil MIND, fareWELL conTENT (3.3.401)

Every second syllable is accented, so this is classic iambic pentameter. When the lines have no rhyme scheme, we call it "unrhymed iambic pentameter," which is also known as "blank verse."

Damn her, lewd minx! O, damn her, damn her!

- othello

  • here is another example of meter used in Othello

As masterly as he: mere prattle, without practice

meter

meter: a unit of rhythm in poetry, the pattern of the beats.

Does the poem go daDUM daDUM? How about daDUMda daDUMda? Answer that question and you've got the poem's meter.

An example of this can be seen in Romeo's soliloquy at the beginning of Act II Scene 2, also known as the balcony scene.

Let it go. Oh, there’s my lady! Oh, it is my love. Oh, I wish she knew how much I love her.
