1978: Johnson & Johnson announces plans to build our new World Headquarters in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and forms a public-private partnership to revitalize the city.

Corporate Governance

Johnson & Johnson is governed by the values set forth in Our Credo, created by General Robert Wood Johnson in 1943.

The Credo values extend to their corporate governance. Over seventy years ago, General Johnson recognized that their responsibility was to four groups of stakeholders -- the customers, the employees, the communities and the shareholders.

1990's-2015 for the Johnson & Johnson Company

The Booming Global Influence in 1894

1990s: Ethicon Endo-Surgery pioneers minimally invasive surgery, which uses very small incisions and helps patients recover faster than with traditional surgery.

Their Credo values extend to their accounting and financial reporting responsibilities. The management is responsible for timely, accurate, reliable and objective financial statements and related information. As such:

".We maintain a well-designed system of internal accounting controls.

.We encourage strong and effective corporate governance from our Board of Directors.

.We continuously review our business results and strategic choices.

.We focus on financial stewardship." (Quoted from the Johnson & Johnson Company's website)

Labor Issues in Johnson & Johnson:

As of 2011's report, there has been no documented cases of major labor issues within the Johnson & Johnson company (in the US or Worldwide). Under Johnson & Johnson's Credo, they believe that is part of their job to protect human rights in and out of the workplace, be it in their baby department, woman care, or the medical treatment, and pharmaceutical centers. As far as I have researched, the only major complaint was a report on Johnson & Johnson's baby powders and shampoos "poisoning" babies, but the story was concluded with a leak of some unknown toxin in a limited number of products that had been produced in one facility.

. In 1894 The Johnson & Johnson company launched the first maternity kit to make childbirth safer for mother and children.

2002: William C. Weldon becomes Chairman and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, only the eighth person to lead the Company since its founding. Under his leadership, the Company enters new therapeutic areas such as HIV/AIDS, and health and wellness. 2006: Johnson & Johnson acquires Pfizer Consumer Healthcare, which brings in heritage consumer brands such as LISTERINE® Antiseptic (first formulated in 1879), BENGAY®, BENADRYL® and more.

.Generations of families world wide, have used Johnson & Johnson baby production on their children.

2010: The Company supports the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals to improve the health of mothers and children in developing countries. As a founding sponsor, Johnson & Johnson helps launch the United States’ first free mobile health service, providing health information via text messages for pregnant women and new mothers.

Johnson & Johnson 2000's Continued

2011: Johnson & Johnson celebrates 125 years of caring and looks to the next 125 years of transforming care for patients, consumers and communities around the world.

2013:

1. Our First Aid Kits celebrated their

125th anniversary.

2. Opened innovation centers in

Boston, MA; Menlo Park, CA;

London, UK; and Shanghai, China.

3. REMICADE ® (infliximab)

celebrated 15 years on the market

and advancing patient care.

. At this same time the famous Johnson's Baby Powder went on the market and had a booming success rate in sales and distribution.

The Johnson & Johnson Company has globalized

through the products it producing and the need for increased medicines, health products and global illness treatment. But they have also globalized through producing some cheap, effective and well made goods (although this is not the case

for all of their products); known as sourcing

efficiency, and through creating a large

market company, conjoined with other

companies today and divided into sub-

companies within Johnson & Johnson,

that produce goods worldwide.

They have globalized using all of the following:

A. FDI – foreign direct investment in everything from retailing outlets to new

factories and new offices (common in producer driven commodity chains);

B. mergers and acquisitions of foreign companies;

C. market-mediated outsourcing ties with foreign vendors, franchises, and

producers (common in market-driven commodity chains);

D . sales expansion overseas finding new markets and/or adapting products for

foreign markets.

. The success of these two lead to the heritage of Baby Business for The Johnson & Johnson Company, a business that any mother knows of.

The Birth of Johnson & Johnson Baby Products

. Johnson & Johnson who originally made medicine, began making baby products when patience using their medicated plaster complained that it irritated the skin. So, in response the Scientific Director, Fred Kilmer sent them small containers of Italian talc to soothe the irritation. These patients found it helped and also worked well on diaper rash, thus Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder was made.

The Johnson & Johnson Company's Diversity

Some quotes from the company...

"People and values are our greatest assets. We know that every invention, every product, and every breakthrough we’ve brought to human health and well-being has been powered by people. Not ordinary people, though, but people whose personal values drive them to make a difference in the world".

"Diversity is a central part of the cultures across the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies. It’s a key to our people’s passion for improving the health and well-being of people the world over".

"We recognize that differences in age, race, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, physical ability, thinking style and background bring richness to our work environments. Such differences help us connect better with the health needs of people in communities around the world".

"We believe that attracting, developing and retaining a base of employees that reflects the diversity of our customers is essential to our success. We also believe success hinges on relationships with diverse professional and patient organizations, civic groups and suppliers".

The Johnson & Johnson company has many different inclusion programs, and activities, along with receiving awards and recognitions for their Diversity.

.The earliest Baby Powder was in a metal tin with an orange and white label, which stated it was “For Toilet and Nursery.” JOHNSON’S® Baby Powder was a success, and the Company began expanding its line of baby products to include creams, soaps, and more. Over time, JOHNSON’S® Baby Powder, with its instantly recognizable scent, became one of the most familiar and trusted products in the world.

With the rapid growth of advertising in the Nineteenth century, after World War I, Johnson & Johnson advertised Baby Powder with the largest ad campaign in its history, with the result that the powder – and the Company’s other baby products – really took off and became trusted components of the way families across the world cared for their children. The products, by their very use, promoted close interaction between parents and their babies, and became associated in people’s minds with the parent-infant bond.

Here are some ads that were used worldwide during the time; you can see that their advertising was not only aimed towards white americans.

A Little Bit More About Johnson & Johnson...

"Johnson & Johnson is among the largest corporate donors, having contributed $966 million in cash and products toward nearly 600 programs in more than 50 countries, impacting tens of millions of lives worldwide. The Company contributed $131 million in cash to organizations in the United States and around the world for corporate and operating companies’ programs and projects".

Today Johnson & Johnson is known as an American multinational medical devices, pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods manufacturer founded in 1886.

The corporation includes some 250 subsidiary companies with operations in over 57 countries and products sold in over 175 countries.
