Who made the 20th Amendment

  • Senator George W. Norris of Nebraska was the primary sponsor of the 20th Amendment.
  • Concerned about the holding of federal elect on the first Tuesday of November to March.

The President

Why was this amendment made?

  • The terms of the President and Vice President will end on January 20th at noon.
  • If the President dies before the beginning of his or her/his inauguration the Vice President elect will become the President
  • if the President or the Vice President isn't qualified, the Congress can select a person to be President until the President and Vice President is qualified.
  • The Lame Duck Amendment takes office in January instead of March (as before), then eliminating the lame-duck session of Congress.
  • To specify the exact time of transition from one body of elected official to the next.
  • From shortening the "lame duck" was to ensure that the business of government was not impeded by a delay in office-taking.

Congress

  • The House of Representative can select a President if the President dies.
  • The Senate can choose a Vice President if the Vice President dies.
