Illegal trade will not magically disappear overnight. Neither will the poachers that are after those gorgeous animals. The best thing you can do to help is don't buy products that use genuine wild cat fur and donate to causes that help protect the cats still in the wild.

Some of the reasons big cats are so endangered include:

How bad is it?

  • To protect livestock
  • Deforestation
  • Loss of prey
  • Fur Trade
  • Medicine in certain cultures
  • Threat
  • In the 1800's, there were around 1.2 million lions in the world. Today, less than 30,000 remain
  • There are less than 7,000 snow leopards left in the wild
  • There are less than 8,000 African wild dogs

Why is it a problem

What is being done

  • Taking away big cats will affect the food chain
  • Tigers play a major role in protecting the forest in which it lives
  • Without lions, tourism in Africa would rapidly decline
  • The entire ecosystem would be thrown off

Introduction

How many items have you seen that are covered in the design of big cat's furs?

Until 2010, genuine big cat furs could be mislabelled as faux. There is now a law requiring that "...garments containing fur be properly labeled." Companies would sometimes dye the coats in order to fool the public into thinking they were faux

What's being done

Big Cats' Beauty

Conclusion

It's no secret that big cats have beautiful coats. The patterns are put on clothes, furniture, and much more. Although it is harmless to paint those patterns on those things, big cats are still hunted for their magnificent coats.

Many countries have taken measures to prevent the hunting and killing of big cats

  • India-"banned the commercial export of tiger and leopard skins" in 1968
  • Great Britain-banned the import of "furs, skins, rugs, and coverlets obtained from the tiger and the snow and clouded leopards
  • Endangered Species Conservation Act of 1969
  • Mason Act of 1970
  • U.S. Endangered Species Act of 1973

Thousands of wild cats are killed every year for their coats. We admire these magnificent creatures for their beauty. We should be doing everything we can to ensure that that beauty will be admired for many generations to come
