What is faulty predication?

The use of a linking verb between two expressions that are not equivalent

Example #1

Activity

Determine if the sentence is correct. If it is incorrect, explain why.

The temperature of water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Fix

1. Depression is when a person is feeling sad.

2. The reason why she failed is because she didn't study.

3. The researcher's main goal is to find a cure for cancer.

Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit

*It is wrong because the temperature does not boil, the water does.

Faulty Predication

Example #2

Example #3

Faulty Predication is where the subject and the verb don't make sense together

The reason why I ate the cake is because I was hungry.

The Fix

Faulty predication occurs when the subject and the verb don't make sense together

I ate the cake because I was hungry

*Saying, "The reason is...because..." is redundant.

*The sentence is wrong because faulty predication is not a place so "where" does not apply.
