William Paterson created and presented the New Jersey plan, which is sometimes called the Paterson plan, after Paterson himself. It suggested equal representation for each state, no matter the size.
William Paterson was born into a wealthy Caucasian family, and so he was able to own land in New Jersey. with his wealth, he studied law in Princeton, or the College of New Jersey, under Richard Stockton. Later, it led Paterson to occupations such as merchant, attorney general, senator, governor, and Supreme Court Justice.
William Paterson (male) represented New Jersey at the Constitution Convention, along with four other delegates. He lived a prosperous and wealthy life as a Presbyterian, a Christian sect.

William Paterson was married to Cornelia Bell in 1779. Not long after, he had three children. His wife, Cornelia, died only four years later, in 1783.
During the revolutionary war, William Paterson, who supported the United States, served in a militia commission. Militias are armies formed from untrained citizens. He did support the Bill of Rights as written by James Madison.
Nearing his deathbed in 1806, Paterson traveled to Ballston Spa, New York, seeking a cure for his disease. Unfortunately, he failed and died on September 9.
