Habitat destruction

Construction of locks and dams along the Mississippi river have prevented flooding in certain areas.

The Decurrent False Aster is dependent on periodic major floods from river to wipe out other species in order for it to thrive. Flooding helps with the seed germination of the plant. Seeds are only viable for 2 years.

The dispersal of this plant is mainly by flood water.

This plant will be eliminated without flooding withing 3 to 5 years.

Run off

Agricultural run off prevents seed germination and production.

Causes blockage and smothering of the seed.

Human disturbance

Populations along roadsides are often mowed during their growing season preventing seed production.

Smith is a professor at Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville

Began researching the Deccurent False Aster in 1991

The only Aster listed under the endangered species act
