How has Musical Theatre Evolved?

What is Musical Theatre?

Musical theatre is a type of performance that tells a story through a combination of spoken dialogue, songs, and dances.

Musical Theatre Responsibilites

Actors, Onstage directors,Music Directors, Choreographers and producers are some of the main responsibilities in Musical Theatre.

Successful Musical Writers and Directors

Andrew Lloyd Webber has experienced tremendous success in musical theatre. He has written and produced many shows, such as:

-The Phantom of the Opera

-Aspects of Love

-Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

-Cats

-Sunset Boulevard

-Jesus Christ Superstar

-and many more.

In the begining,

5th century BC:

Musical theatre can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks who incorporated songs and dance on stage.

1700's- 1800's

It first began with opera, which was very fashionable with the upper classes in Europe in the 17- and 1800's.

Late 1800's

The first musical was The Black Crook by Charles M. Barrs and Giuseppe Operti in 1866, which ran for a record-breaking 474 performances.

The Roaring 20's and 30's (1920's-1930's)

A huge boom in musical theatre production occured in this era. Some famous musical theatre productions

  • No, No, Nanette
  • Oklahoma!
  • Beyond the Horizon
  • Strange Interlude

The Golden Age 1943-1968

The tradition of musicals further developed in Great Britain and America. Some of the best-known musicals were written in this time period.

  • Oklahoma!

Mid 1900's (Specifically 1957)

Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim were influenced by the shift to rock and roll music (see more in next screen). They they wrote West Side Story in this year, which has flavors of jazz, rock, and Latin music.

Also in this era, The Sound of Music, a well known musical theatre production, opened on Broadway on November 16th, 1959.

In the late 1950's and early 1960's

In the late 1950's and early 1960's is when popular music began to change with rock and roll music. The first rock musical was in the 60's. Some examples of rock musicals:

  • Hair
  • Grease
  • Rent
  • Spring Awakening
  • Next to Normal

Late 1900's

1982 is famous for the musical Cats as it had extravagant costumes and makeup.

Late 1980's and early 1990's

In 1987, Les Miserables one of the most well-known musicals opened. Then not long after in 1988 The Phantom of the Opera, one of the longest-running musicals, opened in this year.

The Present day

Musicals have now been split into two genres and subcatigories. They often now address very serious issues and are not just for entertainment. Musicals are now commonly adapted from films such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, The Lion King, and Legally Blonde.

The Present Day Continued

Recent musicals that have opened up on Broadway:

Mamma Mia (2001)

Hairspray (2002)

Wicked (2003)

Jersey Boys (2005).

All of these Broadway shows have either been adapted from a movie or based on a band such as the musical Jersey Boys.
