Conclusion

Why Do Muslims Make a Pilgrimage To Mecca?

In conclusion, there are a variety of different and interesting reasons for Muslims to travel to Mecca. Islam is a major religion, and, as a result, this makes Hajj a significant event, not just in the Muslim calendar, but on a global scale. Hajj is a very significant event, as it is one of the five pillars of the core Muslim faith.

Introduction - Islam Overview

Islam is one of the five major religions in the world, with approximately 1.1 billion people identifying themselves as Muslim. The core belief in Islamic faith is that there is one all-powerful God, who is referred to by the Arabic word for God - “Allah”. Islam’s practices are based on the five pillars - daily prayer, faith, fasting, almsgiving and, to make a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in your lifetime, if you can afford it. This is known as Hajj.

Why They Go To Mecca

There are many different reasons for Muslims to travel to Mecca to perform Hajj. One of these is because the Hajj is, as aforementioned, one of the five pillars of Islamic faith. These pillars are mandatory for Muslims to perform, so a Muslim must carry out this pilgrimage. Another reason for this, which digs deeper into the Islamic faith, is for unity, or ‘tahweed’, meaning ‘oneness’. As part of Islamic spirituality, it is taught that Allah, and all of humanity, are one. This is evident in Hajj, as two million Muslims of completely different cultures, races, and economic statuses put aside their differences and become ‘one’. One other reason that Muslims travel to Mecca for Hajj is to regain focus. Hajj is a time for Muslims to focus, and it brings lots of focus and context, as being around millions of other Muslims who are doing the same thing as them is a very thought-provoking and powerful experience, as it makes a Muslim reflect and remind themselves of their values and beliefs.

Location Overview

The city of Mecca is located in the middle eastern country of Saudi Arabia. The main feature of Mecca is the Ka’ba, which is the ‘house of God’ for muslims, believed to have been built by Abraham and his son, Ishmael. Few non-muslims have ever entered Mecca, as it is Muslim only. Because of this, there are roadblocks stationed outside the city to prevent non-muslims from entering.
