Alcohol

Drinking a lot over a long time or too much on a single occasion can damage the heart, causing problems including:

• Cardiomyopathy – Stretching and drooping of heart muscle

• Arrhythmias – Irregular heart beat

• Stroke

• High blood pressure

Kills over 15,000 people each year. Can cause damage to the heart, which leads to many more deaths each year.

Several cardiovascular complications are closely related to cocaine use. They include chest pain syndromes, heart attacks, heart failure, strokes, aortic dissection, and fatal and nonfatal arrhythmias.

Others include:

myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle)

endocarditis (inflammation of the inner lining of the heart)

Liver

Drugs

Alcohol

Alcohol interferes with the brain’s communication pathways, and can affect the way the brain looks and works. These disruptions can change mood and behavior, and make it harder to think clearly and move with coordination.

The liver helps us filter out waste and harmful substances from the blood. If you guessed that I am going to tell you that inhalants are poisons, you are right. And, when we bring these poisons into our body, we make our liver work extra hard, which might cause it to break down and not function as well.

Heavy drinking takes a toll on the liver, and can lead to a variety of problems and liver inflammations including:

• Steatosis, or fatty liver

• Alcoholic hepatitis

• Fibrosis

• Cirrhosis

Alcohol

Drugs

Your kidneys filter harmful substances from your blood like alcohol. Alcohol makes the process of filtration difficult.

Some drugs may cause kidney damage or failure, either directly or indirectly from dangerous increases in body temperature and muscle breakdown.
