What is a Benham's disk?

A Benham's disk is a spinning top that is half printed with solid black and half printed with a black and white design. When you spin the disk, you see different colors, although there is only black and white on it when it is still.

Procedures

For one of the Benham's disks, I printed out a pre-made template and attached it to a piece of cardboard and a toothpick. For the other Benham disk, I drew my own design with black sharpie. 'xs

Background Info

Scientists are not certain of what specifically causes us to see colors when the Benham's disk is spun. One theory is that the colors result from changes in the retina that interacts with the nervous system and allows us to see color. Another theory is that when the disk is spun, the white activates all of the cones in the eye and the black deactivates them. The constant changing may cause the brain to think you are seeing color.
