Airflow inside a reefer container

By Hugo Carrillo

The air should flow through the T-floor under pressure. If there is not an air short-circuit present the air will flow within the pallets. It will extract the heat from the fruit and the hot air will return to the cooling system.

Hot air

Geest containers were modified by placing wooden boards on the floor and replacing the air flow system.

How this will affects the cooling efficiency of the container?

In order to investigate temperature behavior, temp recorders were installed at 3 locations inside the container: the front, the middle and the rear.

Cold air

Also 3 locations among the pallets were investigated: the bottom, the middle and the top.

We did 2 repetitions in 2 different Geest containers. The containers were located in DomRep, Plantaciones del Norte yard, between the 28/09/2015 and the 01/10/2015.

These are the results…

No air flow within the pallets!

  • In conclusion, this modification on the air flow system has reduced the containers cooling efficiency.
  • Uneven cooling conditions can be found into the container.
  • As far away the pallet is located from the refrigeration unit, less efficient the refrigeration is.
  • Cooling is also uneven among the pallets.
  • As far away the box is from the floor, less efficient the refrigeration is.
  • This can be easily explained by the fact that, with this modification, now there is not coherent air flow inside the container and the air do not flow within the pallets.
