Piazza Sordello

Sordello Square is considered the centre of the word famous town of Mantua. In this square you can see the Duomo and the Palazzo Ducale

Palazzo Ducale

The Duomo

Palazzo Ducale was the residence of the Gonzagas from 1328 to 1707. At the beginning there were only some parts of it and later Saint Giorgio castle was added and this one became the real residence of the family from 1459. We can find wonderful pictures by Guido Romano.

The Duomo is also called Saint Peter Cathedral. It's one of the most ancient buildings in Mantua. It was enlarged and rebuilt during the centuries. This is the reason why it is now a mixture of styles.

Camera degli Sposi

In the north-east tower of the castle we can admire the very famous "Camera degli Sposi" by Andrea Mantegna, one of the most famous painters of the Renaissance periods.

From the second half of the XVI century the buildings became really enormous because different buildings were joined together through galleries and corridors and it became a unique huge palace with interior gardens and squares

Mincio

The Mincio River flows through Mantua where it also gives place to three little lakes. You can have a short cruise on the lakes (it lasts about one hour and a half). During the cruise you can admire the town from the water and its bridges. The most famous Bridge is Saint George's Bridge

Saint George's bridge

It was built in the XII century. It had been built in wood but, thanks to Luigi Gonzaga, it was rebuilt in bricks during the Renaissance periods. In 1417 it was covered by a roof. It is very pictureque and it is one of the landmarks tourists usually visit when they are in Mantua

Palazzo Te

Palazzo Te

It is now an important museum and an international cultural centre.

There are very famous painted rooms such as: "Sala dei Cavalli", "Sala di Amore e Psiche", "Camera degli Stucchi" and "Camera dei Giganti".

At a stone's throw from Sordello Square there is also the most famous building in Mantua: Palazzo Te. Federico II Gonzaga commissioned it to the architect Giulio Romano. It was built between 1524 and 1534. Federico II built it for his beloved Isabella Boschetti. It was built because he wanted to organize parties and balls in it but it should also be a place where his horses were kept.

Palazzo Podestà

Basilica di San Andrea

It is between Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza Broletto. It was built in 1227 and it is composed of different buildings. It was destroyed by fire in 1241 and in 1413 so, some parts of it were rebuilt years later, above all from 1941 by the architect Aldo Andreani

Another important church is Sant Andrew's Basilica. It was built between the XV and XVIII century on the ruins of two ancient churches. It's in Mantegna Square, in the place where, according to a legend, Saint Longino hid some vases full of earth and Christ's blood.

The Chapel is where the famous painter Andrea Mantegna is buried. Even this church is a mixture of styles beacuse many parts of it were added or restored in different centuries.
