The Journal of Scott Pendleton Collins By Walter Dean Myers Period 3

Step 8: Crisis

Step 2: Call To Adventure

Step 4: Departure

Step 11: New Life

  • Finally enter England with Bobby Joe
  • Went pass Stonehenge

Visual: I pretty much see Scott and Bobby entering England and unpacking their stuff.

Quote: “When we reached England, we went on pass together and we traveled to a place called Stonehenge.” Pg. 4

  • Scott gets shot above the knee.
  • Lt. Hanken calls out a medic.
  • Scott sees Lt. Hanken fine.
  • Realizes that he was calling medics for me.

Visual: It was the worst moment of his life because he always wished to not get killed. Luckily he got shot above the knee which isn’t that dangerous

Quote: "At first I didn’t know what was wrong with him, because he looked okay, and the realized he was calling medics for me. I had been shot just above the knee.” Page 110

  • Had to go to Omaha Beach in England.
  • Can see Omaha beach through smoke
  • Noise was unbelievable
  • Shells were hissing over our heads
  • Booms along the shore
  • Navy pounded the Nazi's positions.

I visual it like a beginning of the ending war because still Scott sees people already dead or getting hurt making him sad.

Quote: “I can see Omaha Beach through smoke and haze as our assault boat rocked in choppy waters. The noise was unbelievable-shells hissing overhead, great booms along the shore as the navy pounded the Nazi positions” Pg. 14-15

  • Studied under GI bill in college.
  • Dropped out after a tear to work.
  • Went to a short order cook restaurant
  • Met Julia Bennett.
  • Married in 1952.
  • Had three children.
  • Names were: Michael Collins, Joseph Collins and Nancy Collins.

Quote: “He started college under the GI bill, but dropped out after a tear to work. He found a job as a short order cook in a restaurant, where he met Julia Bennett. They were married in 1952 and had three children: Nancy Collins, Joseph Collins and Michael Collins” Page 115

Visual: "After this hard war Scott Pendleton Collins goes to College, gets married and has 3 kids." Page

Step 5: Trials

Step 1: Status Quo

  • Germans decide to booby trap the Americans.
  • Have to stick your musket on the ground to check anti bombs.
  • Need to dig carefully or else BOOM for you.

Visual: It is pretty awkward that the Germans just put traps to kill their enemies. It is just weird. Can’t they just fight like real men to kill their enemies?

Quote:“All what you have to do is stick your bayonet in the ground and you can find them. Then you need to dig carefully to make sure the Germans haven’t booby trapped them by putting anti-personnel mine go off too easy.” Page 66

Step 12: Status Quo

Step 9: Results

  • No status quo
  • Because the hero doesn't have anymore journeys or adventure.
  • Still goes through life like a normal hero.
  • Scott and Bobby come to England.
  • Bobby Joe is his best friend.
  • At his parent's house there are picture in the wall where his father and great Grandfather.
  • Scott wants to be in that wall to show that all three showed they served their country.

I visual Scott and his friend Bobby Joe come to England and get ready for action against the Nazis.

Quote: Scott always wished to say, “I would like to have my picture on that wall. It would make me proud to show that I served my country just like my dad and my great-grandfather did.” Pg.3-4.

  • Nazis don't attack back
  • Russians were taking back their land from the east.
  • American bombers bombing German cities.
  • Americans and English were making a great buildup in England.
  • Germans knew it was an invasion force.

Visual: The Nazis don’t attack back because they are outnumbered by Russians, English, American, and France.

Quote: “By 1944, American Bombers flying from bases in North Africa were bombing German Cities. On the eastern front Russians were taking back their cities. In England there was a great buildup of English and American troops. The German knew these troops were meant to be an invasion force.” Page 122

Step 6: Approach

  • People were in water
  • Had to escape the boat because Nazi's attacking
  • Some people were already dead in the water.
  • Boat ramp dropped.

Visual: That was their first war and the biggest out of all the wars during their time.

Quote: “Everywhere there were guys in the water. Some were splashing their way toward the shore as bullets kicked up the water around them. Others were already dead, their bodies floating against the steel obstacles. As we stopped on a sandbar, our boat’s ramp dropped. I could hear fire from the automatics slamming into steel sides.” Page 15

Step 3: Assistance

Step 10: Return

Step 8: Crisis

  • Came to parents in Roanoke
  • Wound caused him a permanent limp

Visual: It became hard for Scott to return with his knee shot.

Quote: “Scott Pendleton Collins came to Roanoke after the war and lived with his parents. The wound he received in Vire left him with a permanent limp.” Page 115

  • Didn't know what was wrong with Lt. Hanken
  • Knew he was calling medic for Scott.
  • Had been shot above the knee

Visual: It was the worst moment of his life because he always wished to not get killed. Luckily he got shot above the knee which isn’t that dangerous.

Quote: “At first I didn’t know what was wrong with him, because he looked okay, and the realized he was calling medics for me. I had been shot just above the knee.” Page 110

  • Lt. Hanken asked Scott to back himself with this weapon.
  • Scott agrees and he knows that backup will way ten times heavier then his M-1.
  • Lt. Hanken gives him the assistance and Scott goes on.

I see Scott getting some assistance from Lt. Hanken. Like he gave a machine gun to Scott even though he Lt. Hanken asked him.

Quote: “Lt. Hanken asked me if I can back myself up with a machine gun. I said yes but told him that I didn’t know squat about machine gun, except that it weighed a ton more than an M-1.” Pg. 11
