Hypertext and the Remediation of Print

Why is hypertext different from

the printed word?

"phrases in a webpage can be "hot": clicking on them will bring up a new page. One page can be linked electronically to many others" pg 27

This creates a network of pages upon pages of links.

"Such a network is called hypertext, and it is the creation and presentation of such hypertextual structures that seem to constitute a new form of writing" pg 27

Hypertext is a useful tool, and can serve the following purposes:

  • “Links can make the structure of the site transparent” pg28
  • “Links can also function like printed footnotes to provide additional information or to document what is on the page” pg28
  • “Associative links can take the reader to other web sites to explore related topics” pg28
  • “The principal task of authors of hypertextual fiction on the Web or in stand-alone form is to use links to define relationships among textual elements” pgs.28-29

"Instead of a strict subordination, we have paths that weave their

way throuw a textual space." (pg 34)

"The writer and reader can create and

examine structures on the computer screen

that have no easy equivalent in speech"

"If the reader *chooses* to follow the link, she expects that the second page will comment on,

elaborate, or explain the first." (p37)

"Reading in the electronic medium can be challenging for readers must decipher the system as they read" (p38)

"Mosaic transformed the web from hypertext to hypermedia in which multiple modes of representation constitute the units for hypertextual linking" p.40

"The supporters of hypertext may even argue that hypertext reflects the nature of the human mind itself that because we think asscociatively not linearly hypertext allows us to write as we think" p.42

"...letting the reader choose links only gives the illusion of control which is really withheld from the reader" p.43

"Hypertext is a process as much as a product"

"In the 15th century the printed book depended on its self definition and its strategy of remediation on the handwritter codex."

It see,s increasingly natural to represent all sorts of information as hypertext on the world wide web.
