Film Poster Flat Plan

Tag Line

Main Image

The main image typically dominates the film poster. It gives the most insight on the film narrative and connotes different representation and themes. My main image will include some setting and a main character. However, I could challenge conventions of using a main character and instead use the main villain or another character who may not feature in the film as much. This could help create an enigma as to why this character is being used and whether they will have a huge impact on the narrative.

From my poster analysis, I have found that there is only one or two (at most) tag lines on a horror poster. The tag line gives a bit of information away about the narrative and also creates an enigma for the audience to discuss. I will include a tag line which could give away some narrative about the ending of the film. This would challenge conventions of not giving the ending away as well as creating confusion around the films narrative as it could relate to any part of the film.

Pull Quote

Billing Block

From the horror film posters I have analyzed, pull quotes are present on both posters. This helps hook the audience in as well as offering them an insight on what to expect. Pull quotes typically originate from specialist press articles in either horror magazines or websites. This allows audiences who follow the specialist press to read about my film and potentially go and watch it depending on how they interpret the article. I will include a pull quote at the top of my poster as it creates space for the main image in the middle of the poster. In addition, it will also give an insight on either the narrative or experience for the audience to read about, therefore creating an enigma about the films narrative. The pull quote will be in a sans serif font in either a white or red text. It will also share either the same or similar font type to the main title.

From the posters I have analyzed I have found that only one uses a billing block. This could be that most supernatural horror movies do not use well recognized actors or actresses. This helps keep the film realistic and allows the audience to relate to the characters used as they seem to be ordinary people. The billing block will be in a small font size (maybe 8-12 point) in a 'Steel Tongs' font type as this is the conventional font used across all film genre billing blocks. I will also include background staff such as directors and editors in the billing block.

Institution and Website

Main Title

The institution I have chosen to use to produce and distribute my film is 'FilmDistrict'. This institution is large and well known in the film industry. They have a large budget which connotes to the audience that my film will be of a high standard due to the large amounts of funding they have available to spend. I will either use the institutions logo or name in the bottom left hand side of my poster.

The website link will be in the bottom right hand corner of the poster. The link will share the same font type to the title as it creates a house style and brand image for the film. The website link is an important feature on the poster which I will include as it offers another source of information about the film. In addition, the advancement in technology and internet usage means that I should use the internet to help promote my film as it will be widely accessible across the world, therefore appealing to various secondary audiences such as young and old movie fans, who use the internet, who may not know much about horror movies.

The main title will be the largest font on the poster. It will also be in a sans serif font with either a black, red or white font colour. The font typography will be unique and eye catching in order to hook the audience in. The font size will most likely be 72 point but could be larger depending on the font style. The title will be located bellow the middle of the poster anchoring the main image.
